Salary: Up to £42,000 per annum, depending on experience

Grizedale Arts seeks a Deputy Director, to make a major contribution to this acclaimed and influential organisation and its programme. The post-holder will work alongside the director Adam Sutherland, holding particular responsibilities for the programming of UK-based and local commitments. The role also includes the maintenance of public and funder relationships, and responsibilities for marketing and publicity. 

The post-holder will be based at the Grizedale Arts office in the Coniston Institute and Lawson Park, Grizedale Arts’ residency base.



  • A comprehensive understanding of the contemporary art world and a belief in the Grizedale Arts ethos of making art an essential component of everyday life
  • An impressive track record of cultural project development, production and delivery
  • An extensive personal network within the sector
  • A capacity to contribute constructively to national and local cultural debates
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the arts funding sector and a demonstrable track record in successful fundraising and income generation
  • Excellent communication skills and proven capacity to deliver complex reporting
  • A willingness to work collectively, flexibly and hands-on whenever required
  • GSOH
  • Driving license
  • Excellent spoken & written English


  • An understanding of and interest in historic and contemporary crafts, architecture and design
  • Experience of delivering projects in a heritage and / or community context
  • Experience of living and / or working in a rural environment
  • Previous experience of working for an Arts Council England NPO-funded organisation


  1. Co-curation, programming and production of the local and UK programmes
  2. Liaising with and reporting to existing stakeholders and funders
  3. Enhancing the PR and marketing strategies of GA and its projects
  4. Building productive relationships with relevant arts partners, including galleries and museums
  5. Responsibility for the organisation’s financial management (supported by the P/T finance officer)
  6. Supporting the director and other staff in the management of Lawson Park and its visitors / guests
  7. Inputting into Grizedale Arts’ website and social media channels
  8. Contributing to the volunteer and associate artist programmes based at Lawson Park
